If you want to paint your home then you have two options. One is that you can use distemper paint or you can go for emulsions. Both have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to painting the house. Distemper is also known as cement paint. This is called so because such kind of paint can be applied directly on cement walls without any other coating on them. They are a cheaper option and they stay good for more than 5 years. Distempers are used for both interior and exterior walls. The usually need two coatings.

On the other hand, if you settle for emulsions, then you can have smoother finish for your walls. This is oil based and it gives a shine to the walls. Being better in quality, emulsions are a little costlier as compared to distemper paints. They also last for about 10 years which is very beneficial. These work well in a single coat and are somewhat washable too.

Process of applying emulsion on walls:

There are varied categories and type of paint available. And one of them is emulsion. Emulsion is water based paint. As compared to oil based paint, working with emulsion paint is far better. Many home owners find it efficient and suitable for their home. There are many benefits of applying emulsion on walls like it’s easy to clean and maintain and it avoids the potent odors that comes from the oil based paints.

It is important to select right type of overcoat because only the overcoat will be seen.

Basically, the emulsion paint comes in three different types of finish:

  • Vinyl soft sheen
  • Vinyl matte
  • Vinyl silk

Each and every type of emulsion finish has its own advantage. The matte emulsions helps in hiding the imperfection on the walls. Vinyl soft sheen emulsion helps in offering longer durability. It is among the list of highly durable material that is efficient in handling high moisture areas as compared to the other two. But when it comes to the glossiness, it tends to increase and grab the attention over the imperfection on the walls.

When you’re applying or purchasing the white emulsion basecoat, it’s advisable of purchasing matte finished. The overcoat can be of any one amongst the three because if the basecoat is matte, it helps in increasing the glow of the overcoat applied on the walls.

Select the right type of tools for painting the walls using emulsion. It’s advisable of cut in the paint surrounding the corners of the walls by using a paint brush. And the rest of the walls should be painted by using a roller. Normal size of the paint brush should be of at least 2 to 3 inch. And rollers should be selected according to the effects you want to have on the wall.

Foam, lambwool and mohair rollers are some type that is suitable for painting. As per the rule, make sure of using roller with greater thickness. It helps in evenly spreading the paint on the surface of the wall.

Before you head ahead, it’s advisable of cleaning the surface of the walls. Remove any decorations on the walls and even the furniture. As you’re painting the walls, cover the surface of the floor by using a plastic material cover. It will not damage the floors. If there’s a radiator attached on the wall, consider removing it off or turning it off. But, it’s advisable of allowing the radiation to be cooled before removing it off from the walls.

Turn off any electrical outlet and cover them with an old t-shirt or plastic shield. Even you can make the use of painter’s tape for covering them. Apply the painter’s tape on the edges of the floors, ceiling and the skirting boards. It’s easy to remove it and helps in protecting the parts of the home from emulsion paint.

Now, it’s the time to clean the walls. Start scrubbing the wall by using mild detergent sand warm water solution on a clean cloth. Damp the cloth and rub it on the surface. It will remove the oils from its surface. After applying it, let it rest for some while and rinse it off with clean water.

Even you can rinse, dry and scrub the walls by using a clean rag. But, make sure of drying the walls before you start applying emulsion. As emulsion is water based paint, so applying it to water based surface might not properly adhere on the surface.

Don’t forget to sand the walls. If your current wall surface is shiny, smooth or glossy, rub and scrub the surface by using 50-grit sandpaper. It will help the emulsion adhere on the surface smoothly. Wrap the sandpaper around the cork block and gradually work on the wall surface. After completing with this step, make the use of small bristle brush from sweeping off accumulated dust and debris from the walls.

Apply the basecoat over the walls. Using it will help in covering the current design and pattern. It offers prevention towards showing original color from showing through the ultimate paint on walls. For preparing the basecoat mixture, Take a part of white emulsion paint and mix it with four parts of water in a bucket.?

Now, apply the basecoat similarly by cutting in the seams using a paint brush and then apply the paint on remaining surface by using a roller. It’s advisable of drying the basecoat thoroughly say for at least a day and then apply the overcoat.

You should always paint the seams first before painting the whole surface. Cut in the emulsion around the edges of the walls by using a paint brush and after completing this, make the use of roller for painting the emulsion on rest of the areas of the walls.

Cutting in should be applied on the edges and areas where roller cannot reach. These include areas on the walls that are touching the ceiling, intersection of walls and floors. Don’t forget to seam the sides of electric board, switch plates, windows and doors. You can also make the use of different tools like large paint brush, and painting pads. But, for the sake of consistency, rollers are the most suitable amongst all.

Let the emulsion dry completely before you apply overcoat. Even, you might need to apply more than one coat of emulsion, but make sure that each coat is dried completely before applying another one. Let the basecoat dry completely before applying the overcoat. If you’re going with dark colors, you’ll need more coats of basecoat. And for light paint, one or two coats of basecoat are practicable. For applying better means of emulsion, check for the manufacturer’s instruction before applying it.

If any emulsion drops falls on the floor or window frames, it’s advisable cleaning them immediately. It’s even easier to clean because it is water based and gets cleaned easily. Get off the spills before it gets dry. But, if the paint gets dried, you’ll need to apply a thinner paint for wiping off the area affected.

During the entire cutting in process, fill up the kettle bucket and drag it while working. Make the use of a wide paintbrush for enjoying best results. Don’t dip whole of the bristle brush into the paint, sonly dip ¾ of the paint brush.

Start by painting a straight line by holding the brush in ninety degree from the surface and apply the emulsion by using straight strokes on the long edges of the walls. Apply the first stroke of emulsion on the edges and wait until it dries, now apply the second coat and make it sturdy to last for long. Even, recoat the corners or the intersection of three corners at time, it might sound tricky but applying it with careful means makes it an easy process.

After completing with the work of cutting in, immediately start with applying the emulsion on rest of the wall. Don’t wait for the cutting in to get dried completely. If the emulsion of cut in dries completely, the difference might be visible of painting the rest and the edges.

Performing this will help the emulsion to adhere correctly and evenly on the surface.
